Interested in learning to compost?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, we each throw away 4.5 pounds of trash every day. Much of this waste can be recycled at one of the Monroe County recycling centers. Check here to find the closest location to you.

However, if you want to reap benefits from the waste you produce while doing something good for your land and conservation, consider beginning composting. The list of compostable items is endless, but here are just a few:

  • Vegetable peelings
  • Paper bags
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Yard waste (grass clippings and leaves, but not weeds)
  • Newspaper
  • Tea bags and coffee filters

It is easy to make your composting system as simple or complex as you’d like. There are also options to implement no matter how small your budget may be. Check out the links below for more information or contact us at the SWCD for tips from our District Conservationist. Worms Way, located North of Bloomington on Highway 37, also has wonderful resources for anyone looking to get their composting system started.
